Google has so much potential and there is a crowd of enthusiasts who are rooting for them, yet why have they failed for the past couple of years? If you look back at the history of the Google Pixel series, you won’t find the word “Success”. When the Original Pixel was launched in 2016, it did create some impact. It was a good phone with an incredible camera system. Google quickly became the world’s fastest-growing smartphone company. Sales weren’t amazing but they were good, as the first phone which Google sold in this new series, it was a great start. The next phone Google launched was the Google Pixel 2 in 2017. This was the phone that would launch Google Pixel in the mainstream, they added a lot of features that users would appreciate. Front Firing Stereo speakers and cool AI features, the camera on the Pixel 2 was outstanding, it was so ahead of the competition. The design on the front wasn’t amazing but the back design with the panda finish was amazing. The Google Pixel 2 was the phone that would bring the Google Pixel series to the mainstream, it was an incredible phone. Unfortunately, the Pixel 2 did come to the mainstream but in a negative way. The Google Pixel 2 XL had screen issues, many screen issues. The OLED panel on the Pixel 2 XL was not good. There were a lot of issues like off-axis colour shifting, OLED burn-in and very poor colour profile modes. Safe to say, Google Pixel 2 XL had a rough start, it had decent sales but it missed the key objective. The objective was to bring the Google Pixel series to the mainstream and because of the screen issues Google Pixel 2 XL was a great phone but unfortunately, it failed to deliver its objective. Next up was the Google Pixel 3 and boy this was a disaster. Google Pixel 3 XL was not a bad phone, but it had a hideous design. It was a phone with a huge notch but at the same time a big chin, it makes no sense. The Google Pixel 3 XL did not do well in sales. After the missteps they took with Pixel 3, Google tried again with the Pixel 4 and boy this too went poorly. Google Pixel 4 had a radar chip called Soli which enabled you to use your phone with hand motion gestures in the air, this was cool in theory but the implementation was bad. While yes, the camera was very good but the soli chip made the Pixel 4 unavailable in many countries along with that the Pixel 4 had very poor battery life, Google Pixel 4 was the worst phone of all Pixel phones and was a complete disaster.

After the disaster of the Pixel 4, Google changed its strategy with the Pixel series. Google sold cheaper phones such as the Google Pixel 3A, 4A and 5A series of phones, these phones were relatively successful as they had good sales numbers. The cheaper Pixel series was doing good but that’s not what Google wants the Pixel series to be, the Pixel was designed to take on Samsung and Apple. Google decided to try this again and they are trying it with the Google Pixel 6. The Google Pixel 6 is the most important smartphone Google will sell and is the most important smartphone of 2021. The success of the Google Pixel 6 will determine how the future of the smartphone market will look like. Google is throwing everything they got with this phone, their own custom silicon chip, good design, fantastic cameras and a cheaper price tag when compared to its competition.
